Audubon Program to Feature Wild Turkeys in Arizona
Brian Wakeling, Big Game Management Supervisor for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, will be the guest speaker at Wednesday evening’s Northern Arizona Audubon Society meeting. Wakeling will take the audience on a journey of discovery about wild turkeys which were abundant residents of a large part of Arizona’s forests in the early days of Arizona. The meeting will be held at the Jewish Community Center of Sedona, 100 Meadowlark Dr., off Hwy. 179., at 7:00 pm.
By the 1930s, wild turkeys were shot out except in the San Francisco and White Mountains. Now they have been restocked over most of their former range with considerable success. Most often seen walking along forest roads or foraging in open fields, usually in flocks of five to 40 or more, the number of turkeys is increasing.
Mr. Wakeling has played an integral role in the reintroduction of the Gould’s turkey in the southeastern Sky Island habitats. In 2001, he was awarded the Henry S. Mosby award by the National Turkey Federation and the 2006 Professional Service award by the Arizona Chapter of the Wildlife Society. For the last seven years he has overseen the management, translocation and hunting of turkeys on a statewide basis.
The mission of Northern Arizona Audubon Society is "To promote the understanding and appreciation of birds and other wildlife and the conservation and restoration of their natural habitats." The Society welcomes guests to come learn more about the birds of Arizona and how they can be conserved. For more information, call 928- 203-0756 in Sedona.
