Lanning Gallery Celebrates New Works by Mark Gould

Lanning Gallery, Sedona’s prestigious 21-year-old classic and contemporary art gallery, will feature highly anticipated new paintings by artist Mark Gould for its “1st Friday” reception, November 2, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Best known for his continuing series “My Neighbor’s House,” Gould has created a body of work that captures pure freedom and vitality. Something that Southwest Art magazine surely agrees with: One of Gould’s paintings was featured on its cover this past January. Working in acrylics Gould carries a core of abstraction in his work that unites effortlessly with elements of realism, whether landscape or figurative. It is our everyday world and inner lives that he captures, with a richness that suggests a wide scope of possibility. Typically, Gould doesn’t plan what he will paint; rather, he begins with a general idea: the house motif or the theme of a sunset, and works it until there seems to be both energy and balance. Every move of his paintbrush is a spontaneous response to the move before. “I can't think of a more boring activity than painting something when I already know how it will look when completed,” the artist says. In his series, “My Neighbor’s House,” a dazzling exploration of the American dream, the artist depicts a lone dwelling or small neighborhood amidst layers of rich color in vibrant patchworks of land and sky. The series is the core of Gould’s oeuvre and offers unexpected variety within a theme as universal as it is personal.
