Wayside Musical Celebrates Sedona History
Wayside Musical Celebrates Sedona History
What could have inspired the early pioneers of Oak Creek Canyon to leave friends, family, and civilization behind? To travel down a mountain and forge a new life in an unknown canyon below?  While they were naturally hardy it was something greater that would cause them to persevere through their first winter in Oak Creek which brought four feet of snow to their tiny windowless one-room cabin without a door.

This is the story of The Purtymun and Sedona Schnebly families. Lifted from the pages of young Charley Purtymun¡¯s writings and taken from conversations between Sedona Schnebly and her granddaughters ¨C the early pioneers of Oak Creek spring to life in the upcoming ¡°Steppin¡¯ at the Wayside.¡±

Toe tapping songs and knee slapping fun are all part of the experience at ¡°Steppin¡¯.¡± Danger and tragedy as well as joys and triumphs all combine to bring the local history of Red Rock Country to life.

Thanks to Artistic Director Jane Alden,  Music Directors Caroline Massett and Eddie Tortorello and choreographer Karen Keifer the play shines.   Costume and prop coordinator Sally Lagace¡¯s personal touch in securing unique props and in costuming details of the period add to the authenticity of the entire production. Many of the historic photos that punctuate the productions are provided by The Sedona Historical Society.

¡°Steppin¡¯ at the Wayside¡± is a delight for all ages. Whether you call the Verde Valley home or you¡¯re ¡®just passing through¡¯, these wonderful stories, songs and dance will warm your heart.  ¡°Steppin¡¯ at the Wayside¡¯ is performed live on stage at Historic Wayside Chapel in uptown Sedona.
