Sedona Public Library Fall Exhibit Features Mary and Fred Pendleton
Sedona Public Library Fall Exhibit Features Mary and Fred Pendleton
Sedona, AZ: The Verde Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild is dedicating their annual fall exhibit at the Sedona Public Library to Mary and Fred Pendleton, well-known Sedona artists and business owners. The exhibit will be on display from September 4th to October 8th and can be viewed whenever the library is open. On Saturday, September 8th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the library’s community room, guild members who knew Mary well and were her students will be on hand to speak about the display and share memories of Fred and Mary.

The exhibit is planned to feature representative pieces of Mary’s different weaving patterns and techniques handmade on both multi-harness looms and simple homemade looms. There will be pieces of both her art and her functional woven yardage. Several outfits made from Mary’s woven fabrics will also be on display. Her husband Fred was an accomplished woodcarver and many of his hand-carved birds will be exhibited along with looms he designed and weaving tools he carved. There is even an example of her weaving incorporating some of his carvings. In addition, there will be photos and other memorabilia from their lives and their shop.

The Pendletons moved to Sedona in 1958 and opened a weaving shop. By the 1960s the shop had expanded to include a school attracting students from around the world. Mary published the “Looming Arts” magazine for over 20 years. The magazine was very unusual in that most issues included a piece of hand-woven fabric to show her yarns or patterns. Mary established the weaving department at NAU, often teaching and demonstrating herself. In 1974 after many requests from various students to learn Navajo rug weaving techniques, Mary published a still recognized and used book called “Navajo and Hopi Rug Weaving”.

Fred and Mary were both involved in their community as members of the Sedona Arts Center, Soroptimists and even sponsoring a bowling league. One of Mary’s accomplishments was to convince the road dept. to pave Jordan Road because the dust from the road was playing havoc with her weaving equipment and yarn stock.

After retirement, Mary set up a weaving studio at Rainbow Acres and taught the residents how to weave rugs and mats and other items that they could sell in their store.

In 1973 she and several other weavers started the Verde Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild with the purpose of promoting spinning and weaving and provide a venue for weavers to practice and exhibit their works and share their expertise. The group has been active for 35 years with almost 50 current members. After both Fred and Mary passed away earlier this year, the Guild has been involved in finding homes for her many looms, weavings and supplies. After the exhibit at the library, many items will be donated by the family to the Sedona Historical Society for permanent preservation and occasional display in the Sedona Heritage Museum.
